Florida Studio Theatre opens its winter cabaret season with 'Sailing: Yacht Rock and Beyond.' Coined in 2005, “yacht rock” refers to a musical genre that originated in the late ‘70s and was over by 1985. But, says Florida Studio Theatre Associate Director Catherine Randazzo, it’s more popular than ever.

Two plays open this week in Cape Coral with Ken Ludwig’s “The Game’s Afoot” at The Belle Theatre and Roald Dahl’s “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” at Cultural Park Theatre. Two plays open at Florida Repertory Theatre - “Forever Everly” and “School of Rock Young Actors Edition.” And The Sarasota Players tackle the Bard with “As You Like It’ while Venice Theatre highlights “Four Old Broads.” Five other shows are closing, one continues its run and there is one limited engagement on the boards this week.

In Carlo Collodi’s classic fairy tale, a lovable puppet experiences curious encounters and daring escapades on his way to becoming a real boy. But, says Director of Children’s Theatre Caroline Saldivar, Florida Studio Theatre’s adaptation of “Pinocchio” is more about the telling than the tale.

This week, “Bat Boy” opens at The Sarasota Players. Plus, two shows close and four shows continue their runs at Southwest Florida theaters.

Florida Studio Theatre in Sarasota has extended “Songbirds of the Seventies” a second time, now through September 20. The cabaret is a musical celebration of the female singer-songwriters who defined the ‘60s and ‘70s.
