According to the American Cancer Society, approximately 400,000 new cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed in 2025. Catching the disease early is the best form of treatment.

FGCU graduate 22-year-old Zoey Carter walked for her mother Wednesday.Jessica Carter -- her mother -- died at age 49 from breast cancer. “I'm walking here today in honor of my mom. She passed away last year after battling breast cancer for four years," she said. "We came here together two years ago, and she did the walk. So I'm finally back, just in her honor.” Zoey Carter fought back tears but gathered the strength to attend the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk. She joined along with several thousand Southwest Floridians, awash in a sea of pink, at Paradise Coast Sports Complex in Collier County.

In 2024, over 23,000 Floridians were diagnosed with breast cancer. For those who enter remission, the risk of recurrence will always remain present.

Free breast exams will be available Friday, August 15.

Data from the CDC shows that in the U.S., 42,211 women died from breast cancer in 2022. It’s the second leading cause of cancer death among women in the U.S., after lung cancer. According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation 1 in 8 women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. In 2024, an estimated 310,720 women and 2,800 men will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer.

Advocate Radiation Oncology and Lee Health Regional Cancer Center partnered with other local organizations to host the tea to increase breast cancer awareness and to educate the Southwest Florida community on breast cancer research.
