Ahead of a forecasted active hurricane season, Florida Power & Light and Community Cooperative teamed up on Tuesday to distribute hurricane preparedness meal kits to over 500 seniors throughout Lee County.

The kits include three days of shelf-stable food, water and snacks, aimed at helping seniors who may not be able to leave their homes after a storm.

Meal kit recipient Artizell Butler says that she’s grateful for kit, and that it makes her feel safer in advance of any potential hurricanes.

“I live alone, so it’s really a blessing to get the meals. It’s a big help, because I cannot cook anymore.”

Charlotte Miller, FPL External Affairs Manager for Southwest Florida, says that helping the community prepare for storms is part of FPL’s mission.

“In recent years, Florida’s had a number of hurricanes. It’s a part of daily life during storm season here in Florida, and power is extremely important, but we want to go beyond that. We want to help customers that need something beyond receiving power back, and this is one way we can do that.”

FPL says that more information on hurricane preparedness can be found at FPL.com/storm.
