Camp Lejeune – the Marine Corps training facility on North Carolina’s southern coast – has a long, complicated environmental history.
It’s the site of one of the worst toxic water contamination incidents in the country’s history, which may have exposed as many as 750,000 people to cancer-causing chemicals.
More recently, the facility has built solar farms and worked to protect various endangered animals. Now, Camp Lejeune is a key player in how the U.S. military is responding to climate change.
