Tropical Storm Elsa Prompts School Closures Throughout SW Florida

The approach of Tropical Storm Elsa has prompted school district cancellations in Charlotte, Collier, Lee, Manatee and Sarasota Counties.

All public school campuses in Lee County are closed, Tuesday, because high winds could affect bussing.

Elsa-related school cancellations in Lee County include in-person elementary school classes, summer camps on school campuses, athletic conditioning, and Support Our Students classes.

Virtual classes are not being impacted and in-person summer classes for middle and high schoolers will be taught virtually.

Lee school district officials say they'll decide about classes and other activities for Wednesday, July 7 no later than 5 p.m. Tuesday.

The Collier County School District has closed all school sites today. Cancellations for Tuesday include all summer school programs, all curbside and mobile meal distribution sites, all extracurricular activities including athletic practices, and all adult and community education classes. District office sites are to remain open. Collier school officials plan to decide about Wednesday by 4 p.m. or sooner.

The Charlotte County School District has cancelled all student activities planned for Tuesday including summer school classes, camps on school campuses, Charlotte Harbor school activities and Baker Center activities.

Employees of the Charlotte County School District are directed to not report to work Tuesday. Officials have not decided as to whether planned activities and classes will resume Wednesday.

The Manatee County School District is closing most school campuses Tuesday, but all school employees scheduled to work are expected to report for duty as usual.

The Sarasota County School District's website indicates that district and school offices are closed today.
