Joe Newman, 101-Year-Old Man, Aims to Run for Congress

The Joe Newman Campaign for Congress

A 101-year-old man is running for Congress in Sarasota. He hopes to challenge four term Republican Congressman Vern Buchanan for his District 16 congressional seat as a write-in candidate this year.

Joe Newman was born in 1913. He has a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting and was involved in creating centers and associations for the mentally disabled in Indiana. He took on this work after he and his late wife had a child with profound disabilities.

Newman told WGCU’s Amy Tardif he’s running as an Independent at this point in his life because he’s unhappy with the state of the nation.
