Lee County Commissioner Tammy Hall resigned Monday morning as federal prosecutors announced she faces a charge of wire fraud.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Commissioner Hall has agreed to plead guilty. Federal Prosecutors allege the Cape Coral Republican made a series of electronic fund transfers from her re-election campaign to her personal bank account between November 2009 and November of 2010 totaling about $33,756. The case was investigated by the FBI.
The U.S. Attorney’s office alleges Hall used the misappropriated campaign funds for personal expenditures including purchases made at Nordstrom, Saks Fifth Avenue and other high end retailers.
Hall is set to make an initial appearance before a judge October 3. She faces a maximum penalty of up to 20 years in federal prison.
Hall announced earlier this month that she would not seek re-election in 2014. Hall had served as a county commissioner since 2004.
Meanwhile County Commission Chairman Cecil Pendergrass is requesting Gov. Rick Scott immediately appoint a replacement for Hall.
