As the U.S. Senate prepares to take a vote on whether the United States will launch a military strike against Syria, most House members are speaking out against the President’s plan.
U.S. Rep. Trey Radel, R-Fort Myers, is among a large percentage of Florida’s U.S. House delegation not supporting military strikes in Syria.
According to congressional tracking from Talking Points Memo, only four of Florida’s 27 House members support the president’s plan to attack Syria after reports surfaced that its government used chemical weapons.
Radel said he has yet to see enough information to justify U-S military intervention.
“These things are happening all over the world,” he said. “We simply cannot pick and choose and be the police of the world. However, we can when there is a threat to our interests, our allies or to us as the United States.”
Radel said he is dismayed by reports and footage of mass killings in Syria. However, he said the war-torn country doesn’t pose a direct threat to the U.S.
Last week, U.S. Rep. Mario Diaz Balart, R-Florida, who represents parts of Collier and Miami-Dade Counties, also spoke out against attacks.
Congress has already reconvened, but the House has not yet scheduled a vote on Syria.
