Legislature Passes Elections Reform Bill on Final Day

The Florida Legislature didn't pass an elections reform bill until the last day of session, although the House approved the measure in March and the Senate last week. It finally passed after the House removed a provision allowing the politically-appointed Secretary of State to punish local election supervisors for problems during the voting process.

The bill is aimed at correcting the long lines and late counts in some Florida counties during the 2012 election.

Representative Alan Williams said the bill didn't go far enough, but it was a good start.

"We want to make sure that no one is standing in line at three o'clock in the morning after the president has already been announced as the winner", Williams said.

The bill would allow up to fourteen days for early voting, although local supervisors can choose to remain at the current eight days. It also allows for more flexibility with early voting sites, and would limit the length of ballot summaries for constitutional amendments.
