Florida Education Commissioner Tony Bennett says he will recommend changes to the state's school grading system this week. Bennett met with superintendents Monday to discuss their concerns with Florida's A through F ratings.

The changes will not mean Florida is trying to cover up low-performing schools.

"What I heard last year when I read about the decisions that were made was that, in retrospect, Florida has changed their standards to keep so many of their schools from being F's", said Bennett. "Nobody's going to be able to say that this year because that hasn't been part of the discussion."

Superintendents' top request was to not allow any school to drop by more than one letter grade. The State Board of Education approved a similar rule last year.

The board could vote on Bennett's recommendations later this month.
