Missouri's Top Public Defender Enlists Governor To Lighten Caseload

Good morning. I'm David Greene. Missouri Governor Jay Nixon might wish he'd begun his career as something other than a lawyer. The state's top public defender says the governor's not doing enough to lighten his caseload, and he's using a line in Missouri law that lets him appoint any member of the bar as a public defender. He sent the governor a letter and information on his client, a man who's been charged with assault. House proposal backed to phase out Florida's property taxes

A House proposal that would ask voters to phase out non-school homestead property taxes moved forward Thursday, as lawmakers and Gov. Ron DeSantis try to reach agreement on a November ballot measure. The Republican-controlled House State Affairs Committee voted along party lines to back a proposed constitutional amendment (HJR 203) that would annually increase the homestead exemption by $100,000 over the next decade, with a full exemption for non-school taxes in 2037.

Thursday, January 22, is the last day voters can request a Vote-by-Mail ballot to be mailed by the Collier County Supervisor of Elections office for the 2026 City of Naples Election. Voters requesting a ballot must contact the Supervisor of Elections office by 5 p.m. on January 22.
