Duke Energy Plans Solar Facility In Perry

Duke Energy Florida plans to build a 5-megawatt solar facility on 20 acres in Taylor County, the company announced Thursday.

The facility, expected to use about 22,000 solar panels, is to be built adjacent to the Duke Energy Perry substation, which is across the street from Taylor County Elementary School.

The project, in Florida's Big Bend region, still needs state and local permitting and is expected to be operational by May, according to a release from Duke Energy.

Duke earlier announced plans to build a 3.8-megawatt project in Osceola County, and a 5-megawatt facility on 20 acres near World Drive and Epcot Center Drive to serve the Reedy Creek Improvement District, which is the taxing body for the land containing Walt Disney World Resort.

Duke intends have 35 megawatts of solar power connected to its Florida grid by 2018, with the amount growing to 500 megawatts by 2024.
