Two Storms In, Hurricane Season "Begins"

WUFT

The 2016 Atlantic Hurricane Season officially begins - or continues - today. Even though two named storms have already come and gone, that doesn't necessarily foreshadow a busy season. The next tropical storm or hurricane to form in the Atlantic Basin would be Colin. To give you some perspective, the third named storm - on average - doesn't develop until August 13. Historical data does not support the idea, however, that a fast start leads to an active season overall.

How and where storms form this time of year is starkly different than where they typically emerge during the heart of the season. And this year, in particular, may be especially difficult to predict. NOAA released their forecast last week, stating it is most likely to be a near-normal year, but Administrator Katherine Sullivan said there are a lot of moving parts.

A normal season includes 12 named storms, 6 hurricanes and 2 major hurricanes.
