Art Center Sarasota

In November, there are 31 shows at art centers throughout Southwest Florida, underscoring the importance of the arts in our part of the country.

This year marks Art Center Sarasota’s centennial season. To commemorate that milestone, ACS asked a collective of local artists to make works of art inspired by a member who was active in the 1940s, ‘50s and ‘60s.

From Sarasota to Marco Island and Venice and Sanibel to Arcadia and LaBelle, Southwest Florida is home to more than a dozen art centers. Most host visual art exhibitions showcasing member, regional and nationally renowned artists that change every month. In October, there are 32 shows at these venues, underscoring the importance of the arts in our part of the country.

Executive Director Kathryn Ceaser is looking forward to the opening of Art Center Sarasota’s 100th season in October. But she cautions patrons not to miss the final shows of the current season. Ceaser predicts that two of those shows will create quite the buzz.

For decades, Sarasota’s Beaux Arts Ball was the social event of the year. By the ‘50s, it had become so popular that it had to be moved from the Lido Casino to the Municipal Auditorium so spectators could buy tickets and watch the gala from the balcony. As part of its centennial celebration, Art Center Sarasota is bringing back this Beaux Arts extravaganza.

The $115.5 billion budget signed by Gov. Ron DeSantis includes more than $18 million for 184 arts organizations. Most Southwest Florida arts and culture organizations remain on the outside looking in.

Each will stimulate viewers’ imaginations and underscore the importance of the arts in our part of the country.
