Among the ballot measures Florida voters will decide in the November General Election is a proposed constitutional amendment that would allocate one third of the revenue from real estate transaction fees collected by the state for land and water conservation projects for the next 20 years. In the past Florida’s conservation and land acquisition program, Florida Forever, received some $300 million a year.
However, since 2009, state lawmakers have cut more than 95% of the initiative’s funding. Proponents of the amendment say it would restore needed funding for water and land conservation. While the amendment has no formal opposition, groups like the Florida Chamber of Commerce have come out against it over concerns that it limits lawmakers ability to make spending decisions and pass a balanced budget.
