The Florida Department of Law Enforcement released crime numbers for the state Tuesday, and crime is at an historic low. According to the FDLE Semi-Annual Crime Report, the state has seen a 5.2% drop in crime in the first half of 2013, compared to the first half of 2012.
Violent crimes such as murder, robbery, sex offenses and aggravated assaults are down by 3.5% . Non-violent crimes such as auto theft and larceny dropped 5.5%. Domestic violence is also down statewide.FDLE commissioner Gerald Bailey says the news is good, but more work remains.
"We began tracking these statistics in 1971, and it is the lowest it has been. Florida is safer than it has ever been before", Bailey said.
But Bailey cautions that Florida law enforcement officers still make 2,500 arrests daily. He also took time to remember four officers who were killed in the line of duty over the past year.
