A Florida House panel unanimously rejected a plan to cut vehicle registration fees in half on Friday. The plan had passed in the Senate and would have saved drivers twelve dollars per tag renewal, starting next year.
The Senate plan made up for the lost revenue by ending a tax break given to big insurance companies for creating jobs. House committee members like Representative Charles McBurney said getting rid of the tax break was the wrong approach."It’s not a great idea to exchange cutting jobs and raising taxes in order to cut fees" said McBurney. "It’s better to just cut fees, and that is what we are doing today."
The committee approved a different plan that would gradually reduce fees on license plates over the next five years. The bill now goes back to the Senate for reconsideration.
