The Florida High School Athletic Association says a measure before the Legislature would effectively allow recruiting in high school athletics. The association says Senate Bill 1164 by Senator Kelli Stargel would lessen oversight of mid-season transfers and allow some schools to become recruiting giants.
Roger Dearing is the executive director of the Florida High School Athletic Association. He says the move is driven by parents whose children were found ineligible.
"So it's just going to breed those people who set out there in the boosters' club and want the best quarterback and go out and try to find the best quarterback or the best second baseman or whatever the case may be – the best soccer goalie – and it creates unfair circumstances for all the other kids who play by the rules", Dearing said.
Stargel disagreed, saying in a statement her bill would "establish true due process and rights for student athletes, which the current system of conducting investigations clearly lacks."
Last year the association found 72 athletes ineligible out of 260,000 who played.
