Elections supervisors around the state have come up with several requests for lawmakers to consider during the legislative session that begins in March. Their agenda addresses three problems blamed for long lines during the November election.
The Florida State Association of Supervisors of Elections is making a plea to lawmakers. Martin County Elections Supervisor is the association’s president. She said, “We’re at a point now in the state of Florida that one size doesn’t fit all. There needs to be flexibility.”
She says lawmakers should allow early voting to be held in more locations – instead of being limited to elections offices, city halls and public libraries.
And Davis says supervisors are asking for the ability to add additional early voting days.
“If a supervisor were to take it back to 14 days, it would basically be on the same schedule that we had prior to the 2012 election cycle.”
Early voting was cut to 8 days during the last election.
The association also wants shorter ballots. They’re asking that the ballot language for each constitutional amendment be no more than a 75 word summary. The entire wording for all 11 amendments was included on the last ballot, which added to wait times for voters.
