Election Day Lines Could Have Been Shorter with Redrawn Precincts

Long lines on election day may have been shorter if Miami Dade County had implemented a plan to redraw precincts.

The plan would have redistributed voters so thousands of people weren't packed into precincts where the population had boomed. But, officials decided not to implement the plan.

Miami Herald reporter Patricia Mazzei has been following this story. She says the county didn't want to confuse voters during a presidential election by reassigning their precincts.

"The county moves people to different precincts every election when there are precincts that close or there are renovations or something like this. But this is across the board. A lot of people would get effected. And that's what they're concerned about", said Mazzei. "They're still going to have to do that. But now they're going to do that in 2013 when it's not right before a presidential election."

The decision resulted in precincts with wildly different numbers of registered voters.

Other factors contributed to the long wait time including a 10-page ballot.

Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez has convened an advisory group who will look at state and local laws and recommend how to improve elections.
