The voter registration deadline in Florida is less than three weeks away for those who want to vote in November. The state’s new election law put a damper on some voter registration efforts when it passed last year.

Parts of that law have now been overturned, and at least one registration group is running full speed ahead. The League of Women Voters temporarily stopped registering voters last year because Florida’s new law gave them just 48 hours to turn in completed registration forms.

The fine for missing that deadline was a $1000 a day.

Executive Director Jessica Lowe Minor says that changed last May after the league challenged the law.

"We were basically granted an injunction by a federal judge against the most onerous parts of the law, and then recently that turned into a settlement and now that case is fully resolved”, said Lowe.

So the league is again working to register new voters, and they’ve even added a registration hotline.

“855-FL-Voter” launched this week and will be staffed from 9AM to 6PM. The League of Women Voters says the hotline offers answers about absentee ballots, polling locations and general registration questions.
