Governor Ron DeSantis Wednesday put his signature on two bills that will impact Lee County.

The legislation signed into law involves single-member voting districts and a mosquito control consolidation.

The single-member district measure, House bill 4001, was sponsored by Cape Coral Republican Rep. Mike Giallombardo. It would amend the Lee County Home Rule Charter to provide requirements for voters to elect County Commissioners to single-member districts.

It would become the rule only if its approved by a majority of voters via a referendum to be held during the 2026 general election.

Lee County, with its close to 835,000 residents, is the largest in the state electing commissioners via at-large voting.

The current system requires five Lee County Commissioners live in their respective districts but elected via countywide elections.

House bill 4035, also sponsored by Giallombardo, revises boundaries of the Lee County Mosquito Control District and repeals state law relating to Fort Myers Beach Mosquito Control District.

It provides for merger of districts, transfers assets and liabilities of Fort Myers Beach Mosquito Control District to the Lee County Mosquito Control District and also requires a vote to be held on November 3, 2026, to become in effect.
