StateImpact: Explaining The Unusual Pressure On Florida's Schools Chief

Five people have served as Florida's education commissioner since Gov. Rick Scott took office in 2011. 

Florida's education chief faces a unique pressure. The state is known for ground-breaking education policies, such as grading schools based on student test scores. But those ideas have also drawn an opposition ready to pounce on mistakes.

The commissioner must also manage the Board of Education, politicians, education businesses, school leaders and parents. That's the challenge facing new Education Commissioner Pam Stewart.
