The cost of a Florida Prepaid College Plan has jumped in recent years. Florida universities keep boosting tuition to be more in line with the national average.
Gov. Rick Scott says the price of a prepaid, 4-year university plan for a newborn has increased more than 350% in the last 6 years.
“You take my grandson Auguste. We’ve looked at doing prepaid in his case. It’s $54,000", said Scott. "$54,000 if we were to pay for it up front. I think it’s $332 a month. Put in that perspective – more than 50% of the families in our state make less than $50,000 a year.”
Scott says if tuition had risen each year based on a regular inflation rate of 3%, the prepaid cost would only be $18,000 instead of $54,000.
University presidents recently announced they will not seek a tuition increase next year if the state will provide an additional $118 million in funding.
