Charlotte County offers sandbags for flood preparedness

With hurricane season underway, the Charlotte County Public Works is offering free sandbag materials to residents.

Self-serve sandbag stations will be available from dawn to dusk in Punta Gorda, Port Charlotte, and Englewood. Residents must bring their own shovels and transportation and are limited to 10 sandbags per person.

Sandbags are recommended only for those who may experience flooding of less than 15 inches from rain or tides. While sandbags won’t stop water completely, they can help reduce the amount of water entering a home. Charlotte County Public Works warns that are not effective against waves or storm surge associated with stronger storms.

Visitors are asked to be mindful of traffic and private property when accessing the stations. Sandbag stations are located at:

  • Punta Gorda – 7000 Florida St., 33950
  • Port Charlotte – 18181 Sinatra Ave., 33954
  • Englewood – 6874 San Casa Drive, 34224
