Tesla Starts Setting Up 'Supercharge' Stations In Florida

Representatives from Tesla, the cutting edge company behind the first fully electric sports car, were in Fort Myers Thursday to unveil a new supercharging station.

Tesla is working to make it easier for its many Florida clients to get around.

Alexis Georgeson, a representative for Tesla, unveiled the charging station for Tesla’s latest product: the Model S, which is a completely electric luxury vehicle.

The car is a novelty of sorts aimed at getting fully electric cars in the hands of average consumers and car enthusiasts.

Georgeson said Florida has already become a major market for Tesla.

“Florida is a really strong market for us,” she said. “We have over 500 customers in the state. It’s obviously a really big state, too. So, a lot of our costumers want to go between a lot of these major city centers. It’s a bit further of a drive for them. So, it’s really important to be able to enable this long distance travel in the state.”

Georgeson said that’s why Tesla opened a “supercharge” station in Fort Myers near the interstate.

“Superchargers allow you to put half a charge on this car in 20 minutes,” she said. “So you can drive from Miami now, stop quickly here in Fort Myers or Port St. Lucie, where we opened up a supercharger yesterday, charge for 20 minutes while you are grabbing a bite or going to the restroom, and get back on the road and head up to Orlando or Tampa.”

Model S owners in the area will soon have “supercharge” stations available as far north as Jacksonville—and eventually up the eastern seaboard to Boston. Charging the car along the way is free. The car cost $60,000. Florida is the first state along the east coast to get a supercharge station.
