I Have Stage 4 Lung Cancer but I Never Smoked

The "retired" Associate Dean for Health Professions at Florida Southwestern University says she has spent the last 9 months on a roller-coaster of health services from M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston and locally. She was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer despite never having smoked or been around a smoker. Suzanne Wells last brought us a couple of personal essays two years ago when she was participating with the Fulbright program as a visiting professor in Russia.

Though her prognosis is poor she shares her story with us today.

Utility commission OKs FPL rate hike; typical bill up $2.50 monthly

A new, four-year rate agreement for FPL approved by the Florida Public Service Commission Thursday will raise a typical 1,000-kWh residential customer's bill about two percent a month or about $2.50. The agreement sets rates for 2026 through 2029 and was developed in collaboration with a coalition of customer groups. The typical residential customer bill will go from the current $134.14 to $136.64.

Ghostbird Theatre Company opens season with outdoor site-specific play, 'Swamped'

“Swamped” is a new play by Adelaide Fisher and directed by Amanda Collins. Ghostbird Theatre Company will perform it behind the old gym on the FGCU Buckingham campus on November 21st and 22nd. As is typical of Ghostbird’s trademark site-specific shows, “Swamped” will require attendees to do a small amount of walking and bring their own chairs and mosquito repellent.

IRS announces increased limits on 401(k) and IRAs for 2026

Last week, the IRS announced that the limit individuals can contribute to their 401(k)s has increased for 2026 from $23,500 to $24,500. The limit on annual contributions to an IRA is increased to $7,500 from $7,000.
