The U.S. Department of Transportation has awarded Florida $60 million to help lift the Tamiami Trail.
With the $60 million commitment from the federal government and $40 million from state coffers, phase two of the Tamiami Trail Project is fully funded. Governor Ron DeSantis in a release said the project is a key component to Restoring the Everglades.
At the completion of the project, 6.5 miles of the Tamiami Trail will be elevated allowing for an additional 75 to 80 billion gallons of water a day to flow under the bridge and into the Everglades.
Congressman Brian Mast (R-Florida) who wrote to DOT last month, urging them to provide the funding, says getting more clean water into the Everglades is important for the environment, health, safety and economy.
