Leon To Take Up Gun Show Loophole

Leon County Commissioners will take up a move to close a so called loophole that lets people make purchases at gun shows without having to get a background check. Commissioner Mary Ann Lindley discussed the issue at a recent Village Square Town Hall.

“Almost all legislation regarding guns has been preempted by the state legislature so counties have very little authority to do anything. We can do one thing, which is require background registration at gun shows. That is a very narrow little window in which a community can act in what it believes is the best interest in its community,” Lindley says.

Lindley says Leon County commissioners considered the move about four years ago, but decided the time wasn’t right. During a commission discussion earlier this week, commissioners supported the idea of taking the proposal up again. They’re directing staff to agenda the item at a future meeting.
