Ex-Navy Pilot Rescued After 20 Hours Treading Water In Gulf

The Coast Guard has rescued a former Navy pilot who spent 20 hours treading water in the Gulf of Mexico after falling out of his boat without alifejacket.

 William Durden's wife called authorities Wednesday night after the 61-year-old didn't return from a planned fishing trip. His boat was later located near St. Martins Keys, about 60 miles north of Tampa. Durden was spotted by a Coast Guard plane Thursday morning, and a helicopter responded. Video posted by the Coast Guard on Twitter shows a rescue swimmer jumping in to retrieve Durden. He was found about 17 miles off the coast of Aripeka. The Coast Guard says Durden told them he was trying to grab a fishing poll while the boat was in gear when he went into the water. The Reno, Nevada, resident credits his Navy training for his survival.The Coast Guard says Durden is physically fine after the ordeal.

    Officials in Florida say an injured mother manatee and her calf have been rescued from a river and taken to SeaWorld Orlando for rehabilitation. The Lee County Sheriff's Office shared video on social media showing Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission staffers netting the pair on Wednesday. Drone video shows the rescue boat circling around the manatees to corral them in what looks like a fishing net before the crew hauls the sea cows aboard. Officials didn't have details about how the mother manatee was injured or their current conditions. The mother and calf are among at least six manatees rescued in the county since Feb. 19 because of cold stress, watercraft injuries and malnutrition.
