State Legislative Session Analysis

Florida lawmakers ended the 2016 state legislative session March 11 with a record $82.3 billion dollar budget.  Gov. Rick Scott got very little of what he wanted in terms of $1 billion in tax cuts and $250 million for economic incentives to businesses.  Contentious bills related to guns, immigration policy and the regulation of fracking went down in defeat.  Meanwhile, lawmakers approved an abortion measure similar to the law recently upheld in Texas by the U.S. Supreme Court.  They also passed bills expanding school choice in Florida and a measure to improve access to mental health and substance abuse treatment.  We take a closer look at what bills passed, what didn’t and what to expect when Gov. Scott reviews the budget with his veto pen.
