Medical Pot Campaign Reaches Its Petition Signature Goal

O'Dea at WikiCommons

The campaign to legalize medical marijuana in Florida passed a major milestone Friday. Elections officials statewide now certify that enough qualified signatures have been gathered to put the proposed constitutional amendment on the November ballot.

Campaign manager Ben Pollara says his organization, United We Care, gathered more than a million signatures to come up with the 683,149 needed to win a ballot spot.

Pollara is now starting to fundraise for what he says will be an expensive and difficult campaign."I don't know how much oxygen there's going to be on the TV waves for medical marijuana in what's gonna be the most expensive governor's race maybe in the history of the country", Pollara said. "But we're going to out there, advocating and educating the voters."

The fight's not over, though. The election can't take place before the state Supreme Court rules on Attorney General Pam Bondi's lawsuit over the ballot language. The ruling is expected by April.
