Florida's candidates for the U.S. Senate met in their first debate Wednesday night. It was also the only debate there will be between Democratic incumbent Senator Bill Nelson and his Republican Challenger US Congressman Connie Mack IV.
The two men had a lot of ground to cover and debate topics touched on everything from Medicare to the embargo on Cuba. Both candidates agree the embargo should remain in place.
Nelson says it has had some positive effects.
"We clearly should allow family members to travel and to take remittances - and that has been expanded - but not lift the embargo", said Nelson.
Mack says Fidel Castro and his brother Raul are brutal leaders.
"We should not lift the embargo to help fund someone who wants to hurt his own people”, said Mack. “Now Senator Nelson has voted to help weaken restrictions."
A recent poll from the Miami Herald, El Nuevo Herald and the Tampa Bay Times shows Nelson leading Mack by 5 percentage points but Mack has been closing that gap.
Nelson is getting a lot of support along Florida's crucial I-4 corridor while Mack is popular in North and Southwest Florida.
