Long Ballot Could Mean Longer Lines on Election Day

Come November, voters are going to have to fill out a really long ballot, and some elections officials say it’s the lengthiest ballot in the state so far.

The length of a ballot could have as much impact on an election as what’s in it.

Besides a list of political races, voters will have to cast a yes or no vote for statewide ballot measures this year. There are 11 of them in total.

Election experts say this large number of ballot measure will make the ballot longer. Add to that the fact that some of these measures are more than 500 words each.

University of Miami Political Science Professor Chris Mann says this could affect how people vote.

“It could make lines very long as people take a long time to read the ballot. It could also mean something for the outcome of these ballots," said Mann. "People have to read these long summaries and they decide not vote on those particular measures or just stop filling out the ballot when they get to those statewide measures.”

Mann says local election officials are going to have to urge voters to vote early or absentee. However, a lengthy ballot can also trip up an absentee voter.

“It may be a deterrent or confusing for some people. They will need to put more postage on. That concerns me as much as the length of the ballot for people who get this unexpectedly long ballot and they don’t know what to do about the postage”, said Mann.

The last day to register to vote is October 9.
