Governor Rick Scott on Monday issued a challenge to Florida's twenty-eight state colleges: Come up with four-year degrees that are both affordable and will get the graduate a job.

State colleges are the schools that used to be known as community colleges.

Scott, who opposes tuition increases, told WCOA Radio in Pensacola he's asked the colleges to come up with options.

"What degrees that they can come up with that they can provide for $10,000 so you as an individual can go get a degree – maybe you go to work because your parents like my parents couldn't pay for it", Scott said. "But can you get a degree in an area where you can get a job and you can afford to pay for your own education and not have to go and incur a bunch of debt?"

The colleges last month put out a plan to boost the number of Florida students who finish their degrees earn more money and stay in Florida.

Scott is discussing his challenge today Saint Petersburg College's Clearwater campus and Valencia College in Orlando.
