State Considers $25-million For Mexico Beach Restoration

Mexico Beach is far from recovered after Hurricane Michael walloped the shore last fall. Now lawmakers are hoping to help speed that recovery along.

Rep. Jay Trumbull (R-Panama City) says a big part of the recovery is beach restoration. He’s asking the state to foot the bill to the tune of $25-million.

“To essentially reestablish a beach this is a $25-million request to put a significant amount of sand back on the beaches to give some life back to what that town sorely lost post storm,” Trumbull said.

The project is expected to not only replace sand lost at the shore line, but also rebuild dunes that could help protect the area during future storms.

  • Blue crabs are familiar to most beach goers because of the telltale blue on their legs – and to most seafood aficionados because of their luscious taste and prominence on seafood menus. While they are found over a wide span of warm near-shore seawaters, they are particularly abundant in Florida. On this week’s “Wild Things” I’ll focus on their seasonal movements, their longevity, their mating behavior, their swimming abilities, and the rapidity with which they can hide from a predator by backing into soft sand or mud to escape a potential predator.
