Tampa-Based U.S. Attorney Announces Resignation

Middle District of Florida U.S. Attorney A. Lee Bentley III has announced his resignation after more than two years on the job.

Bentley said in a news release Monday he has tendered his resignation to President Donald Trump and Attorney General Jeff Sessions. He was nominated by former President Barack Obama in 2014 and confirmed by the Senate in December of that year.

During Bentley's tenure as U.S. Attorney, the office indicted more than 4,200 cases and charged more than 5,500 defendants. The office is currently prosecuting Noor Salman, who has been charged with helping her husband, Omar Mateen, plan last year's Orlando nightclub shooting that left 49 people dead. Mateen died during a gunfight with police.

The Middle District of Florida includes 35 of the state's 67 counties. Bentley oversaw offices in Tampa, Orlando, Jacksonville, Fort Myers and Ocala.
