Poet Richard Blanco Headlines Sanibel Island Writers Conference

Sanibel Island Writers Conf website

Florida Gulf Coast University hosts the eighth annual Sanibel Island Writers Conference beginning Nov. 7. We recently caught up with conference headliner and award winning poet Richard Blanco. This year Blanco joined the ranks of such poets as Maya Angelou and Robert Frost when he was selected to compose and read a poem at President Obama’s second inauguration ceremony. Blanco is the youngest person, the first Latino and the first openly gay person who’s had the honor of writing a poem for a U.S. presidential inauguration. We talk with Blanco about his craft, his life, and how his upbringing has impacted and inspired his work.
