Internet Cafe Operators Have Criminal Records and No Background Checks

A ban on internet cafes is expected to be approved this legislative session. A Miami Herald investigation found that several internet cafe operators who pleaded with lawmakers not to outlaw their businesses have criminal records.

Mary Ellen Klas in the Herald/Times Tallahassee bureau says background checks are standard for the regulated gaming industry, but not for internet cafes.

“There's no requirement that there's a background check. There's no financial inquiry", Klas said. "There's no guarantee that you are who you say you are, that the money that you are collecting goes to where you say it's going. And that's exactly why we had this investigation into the Allied Veterans groups. So, who knows what other kinds of sketchy operations are going on.”

The charity group called Allied Veterans of the World is accused of running an illegal gambling ring at dozens of cafes in Florida.

The case led to the resignation of Lt. Gov. Jennifer Carroll. She used to own a public relations firm that represented the group.

  • White Ibises are common birds of Florida wetlands that increase in numbers with arrival of migrants from more northern areas. While they normally feed in shallow water, they have also become birds of grassy areas such as our yards, parks, and highway and canal rights-of-way. Adults have white plumage with only the tips of outer primaries black -- a characteristic that reduces wear of those feathers. Sex of adults is often easy to distinguish when the birds are in a group. Males are larger with a longer, straighter (but still curved) bill.Females are smaller with a shorter, often more-curved bill. Young White Ibises always have white on their underparts, but recent fledglings can be almost all gray-brown. Over their first year the more-gray plumage is replaced by brown and then gradually changes to the white of an adult. Through much of the year the legs, bill, and face of a White Ibis is flesh-colored or pink, but as nesting approaches the bill, face, and legs become vibrant red. Both sexes have beautiful light blue eyes.
