Tropical Storm May Bring High Winds by Friday

NOAA

South Florida could be feeling the effects of a tropical system by this weekend.

Tropical Storm Sandy is about 345 miles south of Kingston, Jamaica and is slowly moving north. But National Weather Service hurricane specialist Robbie Berg tells us the storm is expected to pick up speed over the next few days.

Haiti is under a tropical storm watch. Jamaica is under a tropical storm warning and a hurricane watch. Berg says those countries could get 5 to 10 inches of rain and even up to 15 in some isolated areas.

The storm is not expected to move directly over Florida, but Berg says we'll start feeling the effects Thursday night into Friday.

"We do think it will at least get windy, breezy", Berg said. "As far as rain goes, that's a good question because sometimes in these systems it's a very sharp line between the rain and no rain, so if the storm is just far enough off shore, all that rain, we may be able to stand at the beach and see it offshore, but it may not actually rain here."

Berg says the forecast should have more certainty in the next day or two.
