Moroccan born author Laila Lalami has published a collection of short stories and a first novel, “The Secret Son.” Now, based on one line that she read in the diary of a 16th century Spanish explorer, Lalami has created a mesmerizing novel depicting an attempt to colonize the west coast of Florida. “The Moor’s Account” has appeared on the notable books lists of “The New York Times,” NPR, and “Library Journal,” from which portions of this review by Sally Bissell were first published.
