Preliminary Work Starts On Confirmation Hearings

The Senate Judiciary Committee will hold confirmation hearings on the nomination of Sonia Sotomayor, President Obama's pick for the Supreme Court.

The committee's senior Republican Utah Sen. Orrin Hatch says barring some "disqualification," he foresees a committee vote in early September, and a floor vote "almost immediately thereafter."

Hatch tells David Greene that even before Sotomayor appears before the committee, some of the necessary work already has begun. Work like reviewing her court opinions and statements.

A heat dome is set to expand across much of the central United States, pushing temperatures above 100 degrees from Dallas to North Dakota. About 70 million people will face heat advisories. Forecasters say the heat will stretch from the desert southwest to the Gulf Coast and into the Midwest and Great Plains. Some areas, like the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast, won't be hit by such severe weather. The elderly and children are especially at risk of heat-related illnesses.
