When Claudine Schneider was elected as a republican United States representative in Rhode Island, she was the first, and still to this date only woman ever elected to Congress from the state. She served five terms before running for U.S. Senate in 1991, challenging the incumbent Claiborne Pell but losing. After leaving Congress, Schneider served as a member of the faculty of the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. She’s currently a resident of Boulder, Colorado, where she works as an independent consultant, specializing in environmental matters and ecological economics.
We sat down with her last month while she was in Southwest Florida for a celebration of the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which was hosted by the League of Women Voters of Collier County. We were also joined by Diane Walsh, president of the League of Women Voters of Collier County.
