From Actor to Author: Karyn Parsons brings inspiring stories of Black history to young people
Karyn Parsons spent six years playing the ditzy character, Hilary, on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. The show was huge in the culture in the 1990s — it ran for six seasons beginning in 1990 and left an indelible mark on pop culture. Her character, Hilary, was — and still is — truly beloved by fans everywhere. What fans didn't know is that during her time playing Hilary, Parsons was devoting quite a bit of her own personal time to writing short fiction, and learning about history — particularly inspiring and empowering stories of African American achievement.

Encore: Meet 2024 Mandela Fellow and Malawian broadcaster Janet Mtali
Janet Mtali discovered her passion for radio when she was invited to host a children’s show on TWR Malawi when she was still in high school. Since then, she has worked her way up and is now its National Director. Mtali is one of 25 Mandela Fellowship for Young African Leaders participants who are in Southwest Florida for the 2024 Leadership Institute being hosted by Florida Gulf Coast University. We meet her today to talk about the work she does and the Mandela Fellowship experience.

State: First-quarter 2024 tourism numbers in Florida set a record
Florida announced record tourism numbers for the first quarter of 2024, as totals for international visitors continue to move closer to pre-pandemic levels.Gov. Ron DeSantis’ office said Thursday an estimated 40.6 million people traveled to Florida during the first three months of the year, a 1.2 percent increase from the same period in 2023. The state also issued revisions that increased totals for all of 2023.
COVID-19 Morning Update
State health officials reported 6,336 cases of COVID-19, Monday, marking the 13th consecutive day of single-day increases topping 5,000 cases. Yesterday's reported cases of the virus increases the statewide total to 206,447 cases since the pandemic began.Florida has seen a roughly 70 percent increase in reported cases of the virus since Phase Two of Governor Ron DeSantis's reopening plan went into effect June 5th.The Florida Department of Health also reported 47 new coronavirus-related deaths, yesterday, bringing the statewide death toll to 3,778 fatalities.

VA halts foreclosures for thousands of veterans about to needlessly lose their homes
The Department of Veterans Affairs is intervening on behalf of 6,000 homeowners with VA loans who are in the foreclosure process. Many more are delinquent. The move follows an investigation by NPR.

The Australian Open hasn't seen an Australian singles winner in 43 years — until now
On Saturday, 25-year-old Ash Barty brought Australia its first singles home win in the Open since the 1978 edition. The final game for the men's singles will be played on Sunday.
