Florida Dumps Quest Lab For Huge Backlog Of COVID-19 Test Results

Florida faced a COVID-19 data mess on Tuesday and severed ties with national lab giant Quest Diagnostics, slamming the company for a previously unreported backlog of 75,000 test results from as early as April.

“To drop this much unusable and stale data is irresponsible and Quest has abdicated their ability to perform a testing function in Florida,” the state Department of Health wrote on Twitter.

Coming after recent weeks of declining COVID-19 cases and deaths, the data dump produced higher numbers that officials declared had “historical significance” but “little impact on the status of the pandemic today.”

State officials are working to restore full SNAP benefits to millions of people after the long U.S. government shutdown has finally ended. Some state officials said Thursday that full November SNAP benefits should be available to spend on groceries by Friday, if not sooner. A series of court rulings and shifting policies from the Trump administration had led to inconsistent distribution of November benefits. About two-thirds of states had issued only partial or no benefits before the shutdown ended Wednesday night. The federal food program serves about 42 million people in lower-income households.
