Edge of the Everglades: Big Cypress National Preserve

Edge of the Everglades: Big Cypress National Preserve, a half-hour documentary, tells the story of the country’s first national preserve through interviews with leaders of the movement to protect the Big Cypress, as well as hunters, private camp owners, renowned Everglades photographer Clyde Butcher, and the Preserve's wildlife biologists. Historic photographs and vintage film highlight the early efforts to include the Big Cypress in Everglades National Park, the subsequent logging of the Big Cypress, and the grassroots struggle to stop the Everglades Jetport. Produced in fall of 2009 to air with Ken Burns' National Parks series.

Florida: Heaven on Earth?

Florida: Heaven on Earth? explores the creation and development of four unique spiritual communities in Florida: the Cassadaga Spiritualist Camp in central Florida; the Koreshan Unity in Estero; Kashi Ashram in Sebastian; and Ave Maria in eastern Collier County. This hour-long documentary examines the role and importance of spiritual ideas and motivations in the creation of successful and sustainable communities. Funded through a grant from the Florida Humanities Council with funds from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Arts Edition Primetime
Arts Edition Primetime is about the wide variety of arts & culture in south Florida. It's about the process of creating great art, whether on canvas, or paper, in clay, stone and bronze or on a stage and in a concert hall, and it's about what it means to be an artist. Produced from 2003 to 2006, the series reflects on the breadth of creativity that defines south Florida.![]()
Earth Edition
Earth Edition focuses on diverse and unique natural world of Southwest Florida. Topics include a deep commitment to the Gulf of Mexico, mangrove forests, ecotourism, Everglades restoration and more. Our most recent productions were a series of shows titled "Water Woes." Produced from 2003 to 2006, the programs received Emmy nominations and won Telly awards.![]()
Untold Stories

The sunshine state has a rich and colorful history. For hundreds of years the state has attracted dreamers, opportunists, inventors and fortune-seekers. Native Americans, the Spanish, and American settlers all have left their mark on Southwest Florida. Yet, unlike world or national history, local history is a fragile thing that is easily lost. WGCU’s Untold Stories aims to preserve the history of Southwest Florida communities. The series explores the legacy of the many cultures that have left their imprint on the region and tells the stories of the people who call this part of Florida their home.

Connect features ways to explore the diverse and interesting region of Southwest Florida. As a guide to community engagement, it spotlights segments on living green, wellness, the arts, regional getaways, volunteering and grassroots activism.
