FGCU’s Big Solar Plans

In this economy the cost of everything seems to keep going up, including electricity. Southwest Florida will soon have an impressive example of energy saving technology. Florida Gulf Coast University plans to build a 2 megawatt solar field. WGCU’s Andrea McCrary reports.

Immokalee Dance Project

An Atlanta area choreographer will be directing a performance in Southwest Florida next month. The featured dancers are elementary and middle school students from the Immokalee area. The dance itself is based on the stories of the people of Immokalee. WGCU’s Andrea McCrary sat in during a rehearsal at Lake Trafford Elementary and reports on their work.

The FBI at FGCU

The Federal Bureau of Investigation visited Florida Gulf Coast University last week, not to investigate a crime scene, but to create one. Students seeking careers in forensic science had the opportunity to train with the FBI’s Evidence Response Team. WGCU’s Andrea McCrary was there and has this report.

Keyboard Conversations

It’s not often a concert pianist gets up from his or her piano and starts having a conversation with the audience. For Jeffrey Siegel this is just part of the routine. Florida Family Literacy Initiative

According to the Florida Literacy Coalition in 2003 thirty million adults were below the basic level of literacy. The Florida Family Literacy Initiative provides opportunities for families in need of reading education. "Zap"

Some people may cringe when they get their electric bills every month. Using everyday things like hairdryers, televisions and toasters not only can rack up costs, they can be potentially hazardous. The Florida Repertory Theater and Lee County Electric Cooperative have partnered up to teach kids how to get smart, get safe, and get saving on their electric bills. WGCU's Andrea McCrary reports on a new children's play called "Zap".

ReCreational Tappers of Southwest Florida

In the 1930’s and 40’s Americans sat in movie theaters and watched film stars in top hats, tails, and evening gowns tapping across gilded sound stages. Since then there’s been a decline in the popularity in tap dancing. But the art is still alive and well in Naples. WGCU’s Andrea McCrary recently sat in on a rehearsal of the ReCreational Tappers of Southwest Florida and has this report.

Low Water Levels in Lake Okeechobee

Low water levels in Lake Okeechobee have allowed vegetation to flourish and birds are flocking to the site. The South Florida Water Management District is taking advantage of this to try and help improve the lake's health. WGCU's Andrea McCrary reports.

Homeless Stand Down

Imagine sleeping outside when it's really hot, or really cold, or raining. Imagine not knowing where your next meal is coming from. According to the State, in 2006, about 86-thousand people in Florida were homeless on any given night. The Lee County Homeless Coalition is working to end chronic homelessness in the community. WGCU's Andrea McCrary reports on its efforts.
