Snooty Turns 60

The oldest living manatee in captivity turns sixty Monday. Snooty has spent his life at the Parker Manatee Aquarium at the South Florida Museum in Bradenton. WGCU’s Valerie Alker has more.

Panther Habitat Plan

A plan unveiled Monday by a group of environmental advocates and landowners would set aside about 160-thousand acres in Collier County as panther habitat. WGCU’s Mike Kiniry reports.

It’s like Smart Growth planning with the Florida panther in mind. The proposed plan outlines which areas of panther habitat around Immokalee in Collier County could be developed…and which could not.

Alan Keller is President of the Collier County Audubon Society…one of the partnering conservation organizations behind the plan.

Alligator Hunting Permits

Alligator hunting permits go on sale across the state Tuesday. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission expects to sell about 45-hundred permits on a first come first serve basis. Trimmel Gomes has more.

Coyotes

In 2001 cats began disappearing from a neighborhood near St. Petersburg. After some investigation and eye witness accounts – the blame fell on coyotes. Nearly absent from the state at the turn of the last century, the wily carnivores are now present in all 67 Florida counties. In Lee County at least one pair is living adjacent to an upscale sub-division – and has been preying on small dogs. Residents are being advised to learn to live with the animals. WGCU’s Valerie Alker prepared this report.
