Gambling Bill – Local Impact

Governor Charlie Crist recently signed a bill which allows for an increase in gambling at Florida’s horse and dog tracks.  WGCU’s Farah Dosani has more on what that will mean at the Naples-Fort Myers Greyhound Track.

Passport Rules Change

Starting Monday, June 1st U-S citizens travelling to Canada, Mexico and 17 other countries in the Caribbean region will be required to have a passport or other Department of Homeland Security approved travel documentation.  WGCU’s Mike Kiniry reports.

Tourism Roundup

Local tourism boosters are marking the 26th
annual National Travel and Tourism Week.  Southwest Florida’s bustling
winter tourist season has drawn to a close.  Visitors spent less this
year.  But as WGCU’s John Davis reports, local visitor and convention
bureaus are trying to buck that trend, adapting marketing strategies to
boost off season visitation in the midst of an economic recession.

Red Sox Stadium Sales Pitches

In
less than a week Lee County officials will choose the final location,
and an alternate, of the new Boston Red Sox spring training stadium.
Earlier today/ on Thursday the Chamber of Southwest Florida gave folks
from the final four sites one last chance to show why theirs is best.

Cars at Ding Darling

The J.N. Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge on Sanibel Island is one of the most visited pieces of federally protected wilderness in the nation.  It gets so crowded, that now refuge officials are looking for new ways to control the number of people and the number of cars coming through.  WGCU’s John Davis reports.
