Friday marks the start of the highly anticipated Summer Olympic Games and among those heading to London is Southwest Florida Chiropractor Dr. Cade Copeland of LIFEStrength Family Chiropractic in Naples. He’s among a network of doctors affiliated with a global health initiative called Maximized Living who have been working with US athletes on everything from how they train to what they eat. Dr. Copeland tells WGCU’s John Davis, that getting athletes to take his advice in lieu of their own established training regimen hasn’t been that difficult.

Jet Blue Park is Open for Business

Boston Red Sox players and fans alike were greeted by a perfect day for their first outing at Jet Blue Park in Ft. Myers.

The players were in their various pens warming up - pitching, catching, batting, leaping, and running at the new training venue.  The fans had their noses pressed to the fence – watching every nuance of every move.  READ MORE

Florida Gulf Coast University’s Women’s Basketball team advances in the Women’s National Invitational Tournament – or WNIT - hosting the University of Florida tonight at Alico Arena. The Eagles defeated Drexel 73 to 67 Friday night. WGCU’s Amy Tardif was there.

Sports Injuries

This week, students across the state are returning to school. That means back-to-school sports and, too often, sports injuries. The National Athletic Trainers' Association says emergency rooms treat 8,000 children a day in the U-S for sports-related injuries. The Healthy State Collaborative's Dalia Colon spoke with a young gymnast and her doctor about staying safe.

Q & A with Chris Sale

It took 13 picks before Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig called out Chris Sale’s name in this year’s draft. That still makes his the second highest player drafted from southwest Florida since Matt LaPorta from Charlotte High School in 2007. The Florida Gulf Coast University junior pitcher spoke with WGCU’s Luis Hernandez about fulfilling his lifelong dream.

6-Man Football

There is a league of  high schools in Florida that participate in a unique form of football; 6-Man football, a version of the grid-iron game made popular in the rural regions of Texas.  This version is played on a shorter field and combined scores in the 100’s are typical.  WGCU’s Luis Hernandez reports on the newest crop of schools to join the league from the state’s southern region.

Olympic Skaters in Florida
